Joint Statement by the European UNAs
Brussels, 6.12.2024
« Multilateralism under threat »

At a time when democracy is in danger, global priorities are shifting, and economic power is
increasingly prioritized over the rule of law, the values and institutions of the United Nations face
profound challenges.
As representatives of the European United Nations Associations, dedicated to promoting the
principles, values, and goals of the UN, we voice our deep concern over the grave and
unprecedented threat to Multilateralism – the cornerstone of international cooperation and
collective problem-solving. The rise of geopolitical tensions, extreme nationalism, and blatant
violations of international law are eroding its foundation, jeopardizing our collective ability to
tackle global crises.
The numerous devastating conflicts and wars – such as in Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan – and
increasing human rights violations around the world are causing immense suffering and will
leave lasting scars on future generations.
We urgently call for full respect for international law, humanitarian law, the protection of human
rights, the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court. Now, more than
ever, we must stand firm in defending and strengthening multilateralism. We commit to protect
the integrity of the UN, its agencies and institutions. We pledge to support full implementation of
Agenda 2030 and the Pact for the Future.
Only through unified and strengthened multilateral efforts can we preserve peace, foster mutual
understanding and trust, as well as develop sustainable solutions that no nation can achieve
alone. The future of our shared world depends on it.
